Jeff's Birthday and the Vegas to Oregon Trail


Probably because I had used about 9 nights of points with Hilton lately, I got a random call wondering if I wouldn't like to listen to a timeshare presentation in Las Vegas.  Since Jeff's birthday was right around the corner and he had not found a destination that really excited him, I decided to take the bait.  Dinner at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant was a memorable event!


We didn't gamble, but I thought that not buying the timeshare deal meant that we were many thousands of dollars "up" and considered it a successful trip!


We then spent two days of long hard driving to meet up with the Northern California Airstream Unit in southern Oregon.  Day one was a harrowing experience!  We drove from the Airstream dealer in Vegas (Jeff may or may not write an entry on our mechanical issues) to the Desert Rose RV Park in Fernly, OR.  This was the absolutely hardest day of backseat driving that I have ever endured!  As Jeff was driving along with the wind whipping us around in the middle of nowhere on a two lane road, a group of 3 tractor trailers approached us.  The wind that they pushed at us was too much for our attached side view mirrors and the driver's side one simply flew off from the impact.  Jeff ran back about a mile to see if it was salvageable, but of course, it was not.  Fortunately, we have two sets, so were able to use a backup.  I spent the entire 6 or so hours, braking and holding on to the door in order to do my part to keep Sally on the road.  When we arrived at the Desert Rose RV Park, I was a wreck!  We ate leftovers and drank rum and diet Dr. Pepper (that tells you how bad it was).

The next day from Fernly to Lakeview was much shorter and easier.  However, Jeff was quite ready to pull in to a stop and rest for a couple of nights.  We now think that 5 hours of driving is probably a good maximum to plan for one person.  We also have really come to appreciate the idea of staying put for a week or so in one location.  This should be easier to accomplish as our year of Airstreaming continues.  Finally, we can think of no good reason at all to ever drive in Nevada again!

Pt. Reyes National Seashore We have now been staying 4 nights in any given campground along our way down SR1. It really makes the trip much more enjoyable, especially now that our weather could start changing on us. Since we stayed out of order (meaning we first stayed in Olema and then traveled back north to Bodega Bay) on our way to San Francisco, I am mixing up the blog entries a bit so that it actually makes a little more sense. The Olema RV park was very nice. There were lots of Airstreams here and we even met a couple who were pulling their 25 foot with a VW Toureg. This vehicle is basically the same body frame as Sally but without the Porsche styling. We have also seen a Mercedes SUV pulling an Airstream, but everyone else has trucks. Both Jeff and I have wondered if Sally was the right call for us, but so far so good. We certainly look good while driving down the road, for whatever that is worth! Santa Barbara

Jeff, Jay and Jay's birthday socks We left Santa Barbara after only 2 nights at what I would say is the worst RV camping spot we have had so far. We were warned of course, but there really was no other choice. We think our friends Nicole and Jess should build their RV/Tiny Home Resort in Santa Barbara now! They are pretty set on Oregon, so I doubt this will happen, but someone should open up this college town to some RV traffic. We were lucky enough to have Jay and Jody drive up from Long Beach to meet us there and we all enjoyed lunch and shopping along State Street, the main drag downtown. Several purchases were made at Lucky, a Clark family favorite. On the following day, Jeff and I got our exercise on the UCSB campus in order to check it out for Isabelle. This is one of her 3 top choices for grad school along with Tulane and Oregon. We sincerely hope she gets a good deal at UCSB because the area is just lovely. And then it hit me...This is Retirement!?

Jeff's Coronado garage Any of you who know Jeff even remotely will understand that his favorite part of our home is the garage. In fact, getting a two car side by side garage was pretty much the only reason that he got excited about finding a new home in Coronado a few years ago. In fact, even after painting and cabinetry improvements, the garage is our number one project when we get home. We need to epoxy the floors and perhaps add a coat of paint, at least to the trim. So back to the blog. As I was walking through some nearby neighborhoods one day in Brookings, OR, I started to notice all of the HUGE garages that are either attached to homes or built standalone beside homes. I would estimate that 50% of these homes had garages with big tall bays and every last one of them seemed bigger than the houses.
