Wally Byam Caravan Club – San Diego

We are joiners.  Jeff has researched and joined us up for multiple different Airstream and RV clubs.  They all seem to provide great discounts, so why not?

Who is Wally Byam?  In my best southern drawl, I should say “bless him” since I would not be on this adventure without him!  Legend says that he created/invented the Airstream to accommodate his wife who also was not a happy camper and did not want to “get dirty”.  Actually, she sounds a lot like me and Wally decided that he needed to create a camping experience that both he and his wife would enjoy.  So, he installed as many creature comforts as he could and the rest is Airstream History! 


We are now members of the San Diego WBCC and spent a long weekend with the group at Newport Dunes.  This is just inside Orange County and was a great location, but more importantly, we learned so much from our fellow Airstreamers!  The local club already feels like home, although we won’t see them for a year based on our travels.  When we arrived, Jeff got personal parking attention from one of the long-timers.  We hooked up and started to settle in.  Right beside us was a 1966 vintage Airstream (same age as me) that was in mint condition.  It was new to the owners, but not their first Airstream, of course.  We had a lovely long weekend with the group and it all felt like a family affair.  We will plan to meet up with them again in 2018 when we are back in San Diego.

In the Beginning

We all like to dream, don't we?  What would you do if you retired tomorrow and had no serious obligations or requirements of your time?  Turns out Jeff and I are pretty like minded.  We like adventure and travel.  After working and traveling in Europe, we knew we could handle being with each other 24x7 in an isolated environment.  The first iteration was to drive our 1977 Land Rover 109 Series to South or Central America.  After I finally confirmed that, while that certainly sounded like an adventure, I probably needed a few more creature comforts;  Jeff suggested an Airstream! I'm not sure what shape this blog will take, but I will en devour to share all the ups and downs of our 14 month journey plus much of the planning that got us here. Santa Barbara

Jeff, Jay and Jay's birthday socks We left Santa Barbara after only 2 nights at what I would say is the worst RV camping spot we have had so far. We were warned of course, but there really was no other choice. We think our friends Nicole and Jess should build their RV/Tiny Home Resort in Santa Barbara now! They are pretty set on Oregon, so I doubt this will happen, but someone should open up this college town to some RV traffic. We were lucky enough to have Jay and Jody drive up from Long Beach to meet us there and we all enjoyed lunch and shopping along State Street, the main drag downtown. Several purchases were made at Lucky, a Clark family favorite. On the following day, Jeff and I got our exercise on the UCSB campus in order to check it out for Isabelle. This is one of her 3 top choices for grad school along with Tulane and Oregon. We sincerely hope she gets a good deal at UCSB because the area is just lovely. Hello CA - Trinidad and the Redwood Forest

Well, we were back in California for the first time since the end of July. Our first stop was not far across the border in Trinidad. We stayed at The Emerald Forest, a beautiful resort that really felt like authentic west coast camping. The grounds included at least 10 cabins, some old enough to have a blanket of moss covering their roof shingles, and both tent and RV campsites. The picture to the left of Jeff and a redwood stump is actually IN our campsite - I am standing next to the car to take the shot. We were so thankful to be staying in our very own little Redwood Forest since Jeff got very ill while we were there. I still think it was allergies; he got very dizzy and couldn't hear (worse than normal) for the better part of the two days we were there. Behind our campsite they were storing chipped redwood for compost or mulch to keep the campground pristine.
