Travel Trailer Test Trip

Well, it is smart to work out any kinks as soon as you can and close to home if possible.  Jeff and I arranged to pick up Betty for a weekend at the Silver Strand State Beach which is about 5 miles from our house.  We bought her in Orange County because they are the 3rd largest retailer in the US and seemed to know their stuff.  We made all the plans and went for our pick up.  Many, many hours later and after a couple of trips to a Pep Boys and the local U-Haul, we gave up and went home.  



As it turns out and as the technicians seemed to ‘sort of’ understand, European vehicles often need to be re-programmed to accept the electrical connections for the trailer?  This was our first lesson in full-time RV living:  you must be flexible.  Things don’t always go as planned and you need to roll with the punches.  I can’t say this enough.  This travel philosophy serves me just as well in Betty as it does in France or Spain.  After a quick trip to the Porsche dealer, we were on our way the next weekend.

In the Beginning

We all like to dream, don't we?  What would you do if you retired tomorrow and had no serious obligations or requirements of your time?  Turns out Jeff and I are pretty like minded.  We like adventure and travel.  After working and traveling in Europe, we knew we could handle being with each other 24x7 in an isolated environment.  The first iteration was to drive our 1977 Land Rover 109 Series to South or Central America.  After I finally confirmed that, while that certainly sounded like an adventure, I probably needed a few more creature comforts;  Jeff suggested an Airstream! I'm not sure what shape this blog will take, but I will en devour to share all the ups and downs of our 14 month journey plus much of the planning that got us here. Santa Barbara

Jeff, Jay and Jay's birthday socks We left Santa Barbara after only 2 nights at what I would say is the worst RV camping spot we have had so far. We were warned of course, but there really was no other choice. We think our friends Nicole and Jess should build their RV/Tiny Home Resort in Santa Barbara now! They are pretty set on Oregon, so I doubt this will happen, but someone should open up this college town to some RV traffic. We were lucky enough to have Jay and Jody drive up from Long Beach to meet us there and we all enjoyed lunch and shopping along State Street, the main drag downtown. Several purchases were made at Lucky, a Clark family favorite. On the following day, Jeff and I got our exercise on the UCSB campus in order to check it out for Isabelle. This is one of her 3 top choices for grad school along with Tulane and Oregon. We sincerely hope she gets a good deal at UCSB because the area is just lovely. Travel Trailer Test Trip Take Two

Our First Campsite The Silver Strand State Beach is literally 5 miles from our house and was the perfect place for us to try out our new wheels/home.  Perfect, except that beaches are sandy and sand is dirty, so I was never totally comfortable at this site.  Since we live at the beach, camping at the beach was not a big deal for us.  It was nice to be able to drive home to pick up things that we forgot or might need.   On Take Two, we got to know Betty a little bit better.  I learned what sort of cleaning supplies I needed.  Jeff got to practice backing into a parking space, which fortunately had two empty spaces beside it when we arrived.  When you haven’t done this before, it is not intuitive.  I have yet to try, but will once Jeff is super comfortable.  I am now much more comfortable riding with him, so that is a great first step for me.  I try really hard not to be Bossy Pants while he is driving. 😊 Finally a su...
